Serving as the athletes' village during the 2010 Winter Games, the neighborhood received rave reviews from event participants. "The project was designed for the residents but also worked for the Olympians," said Margot Long, BCSLA, FCSLA, ASLA, a principal at PWL. Designed as a model of sustainability, SEFC recently earned LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The neighborhood occupies about 80 acres (32 hectares) near downtown Vancouver and, when fully developed, will be home to 10,000 to 12,000 residents.

The SEFC Waterfront Park is one of the premier projects designed by Vectorworks user PWL. "We were hired by the City of Vancouver because of our past design experience on the waterfront, in the public realm, and with sustainability," said Margot.

Featuring walkways, bicycle paths, and gathering areas, the Waterfront Park offers a variety of green spaces with a contemporary, urban feel. Sustainable features of the project include the use of local granite, sustainably harvested wood, recycled steel, native plants, and solar-powered trash receptacles. The project also included habitat restoration along the waterfront with the creation of a new habitat island and a network of biofiltration swales and ponds to cleanse storm water.
