The days were warm, the nights were cool, and the shows were hot at Rock in Rio: Lisbon. Over our week in Portugal, we worked hard and played hard, taking every opportunity to interview the lighting designers working at the festival.
Since announcing that this year’s annual Build Earth Live competition would focus on designing a high-speed Hyperloop station connecting Dubai and Fujairah, the concept has gone from experimental to tangible. In the past, this 48-hour competition called for designers around the world to come together as teams and create innovative structures using BIM workflows and cloud technology, but these designs were never more than models. This year, Build Earth Live organizers Asite, supported by headline sponsor Vectorworks, have partnered with Dubai Future Foundation, Dubai's Road and Transport Authority, and Hyperloop One, a company developing the world's first Hyperloop, to potentially bring the winning design to life.
We’ve recognized over 30 of the world’s most outstanding design students over the past two years with Vectorworks Design Scholarships. So to supplement this ongoing program and further our commitment to tomorrow’s visionaries, we’re sponsoring the 2016 Young Talent Architecture Award (YTAA). This inaugural prize supports graduating architects, urban planners, and landscape architects in Europe, helping them to transform the world and create remarkable experiences with their designs.

The annual Build Earth Live competitions bring together designers from across the globe to tackle a wide variety of challenges using BIM workflows and cloud technology, and this year is no different. Organized by Asite, this year’s competition is centered around linking Dubai and Abu Dhabi with a super-speed Hyperloop. In particular, it focuses on creating station terminuses within the context of the two cities in the United Arab Emirates. The 48-hour event kicks off on Monday, May 23, 2016 at noon ET and ends on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at noon ET. The wide timeframe facilitates flexible schedules among international team members in different time zones.
