Today, buildingSMART International announced the availability of a new database of software applications that are compatible with the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard.

The database contains information about IFC-compatible applications for the whole range of design and construction disciplines, including architectural, structural, building services, facility management and model viewing. It also underlines how broad IFC support has become.

The resource is a result of work done by our very own BIM specialist, Jeffrey Ouellette, Assoc. AIA. Ouellette has been the Nemetschek Vectorworks representative to buildingSMART's Implementation Support Group (ISG) since 2009 and was recently named deputy chair of ISG. The idea for the database came to him as he was trying to identify the extent of IFC implementation for internal development research and the education of Vectorworks users. He had expected to find a dozen or so resources, but the reality he uncovered was very different: he identified 50 applications by 37 vendors in his initial research efforts.

With the support of Thomas Liebich, leader of buildingSMART’s Model Support Group, and Rasso Steinmann, chair of the ISG, what started as a simple spreadsheet has now become an online database with 133 applications and utilities by 92 developers.

“This impressive list shows the full range of IFC support,” says Liebich. “We are grateful to the companies who are engaged in IFC implementation for the statements they have provided.”
