Chicago's Park at Lakeshore East: A place to stroll, linger, and play

The nautical themes utilized throughout the park provide a true sense of place and interaction. The graceful lines and forms that define a sailboat serve as inspiration for the shape of the walkways and plantings within the park, reinforcing the relationship with the waterfront.

With offices in Houston, TX and Solana Beach, CA, The Office of James Burnett creates landscapes that relate to the rhythm of the surrounding architecture while weaving in unforgettable sensory experiences with a creative and unique plant palette. One such example is The Park at Lakeshore East.

Located in downtown Chicago, the six-acre park functions as the heart of a 28-acre, high-density community that includes residential hi-rises, commercial and retail space, and hotel rooms. The park contains hundreds of trees and more than 100 varieties of perennials, grasses, and flowers. In addition, a great lawn stretches from one end to the other, offering recreational opportunities and a place to hold farmers’ markets and festivals on the weekends. Arching walkways intersect the park, creating rooms for botanical gardens, sparkling water features, a children’s playground, and even a dog park. The resulting experience is just as dazzling to the senses as it is to the eyes.

Fountains carry water throughout the park, creating a sense of movement, a steady reminder of place, and a relaxing and energizing link with the natural environment.
