Created to support the various implementation and certification activities for buildingSMART standards, buildingSMART International's Implementation Support Group (ISG) works to improve and promote the use of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) for the exchange and sharing of Building Information Model (BIM) data among different software products. To offer context to the alphabet soup, IFC is intended to describe building and construction industry data and BCF is an open file XML format that supports workflow communication in BIM processes. And now, our very own Jeffrey W. Ouellette, Assoc. AIA, IES, senior product specialist – architecture industry, has been appointed to Chair the group following several years of dedicated service.

Together with his buildingSMART colleagues, Ouellette created and maintains the IFC-Compatible Implementations Database. And since joining ISG, he has been a major advocate for IFC and openBIM standards among end users and the vendor community, trying to mediate the needs of all parties. According to Ouellette, the future of the global building industry depends on the cooperation of all sides to create, implement, and make use of solutions that ultimately make everyone’s work more effective and result in greater value.

As Chair, Ouellette's roles will include leading all group meetings and forums, and representing the group during buildingSMART discussions and events. Additionally, he will work with buildingSMART International's leadership on objectives to increase group membership and improve communication with end users. His Vectorworks experience of delivering public presentations and educational sessions at AEC industry events about BIM, his implementation of BIM interoperability using IFC, and his engagement with firms at various level of expertise with BIM workflows, prepared him for this position.

"One major goal is to expand ISG membership and participation to include more vendors that claim support for IFC in their products. This ensures that their implementations are of the highest quality and compatible with the work of those who have been part of the ISG and its efforts for some time," said Ouellette.

ISG membership is open to all international software companies that are members of a local or regional chapter or alliance of buildingSMART. Currently, ISG organizes regular, in-person meetings during the spring and fall seasons, and also conducts conferences to discuss implementation and support strategies by phone and online.
