When we think of Vectorworks software users, we typically picture design professionals or aspiring university students, but in Ladue, Missouri, Sharrie Cognac is working with an unlikely group: middle school students. Since 1998, Cognac has been teaching the seventh and eighth graders of Ladue Middle School how to design and draft using Vectorworks software as a part of her Industrial Technologies courses.

When it comes time for students to start their master project, it can seem like an ominous, looming task, and making up your mind on what to focus on can be difficult, too. But for Raphael Leonida, a recent DeMontfort University graduate, he knew exactly what he wanted to design for his master project: an occupational therapy center.
Anthony Caldwell, with the UCLA Experiential Technologies Center, set out seven years ago to understand how the legendary Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was constructed. Since receiving the first Vectorworks Academic Research Grant, the team has arrived at an answer. “Our research question was: could the lighthouse have existed in the form that is described? And the answer, the bottom line, is yes,” says Caldwell.
