We are ‘BIM’ing with pride to announce that the free BIMobject App is now integrated into Vectorworks 2017 software. The App manages and downloads native Vectorworks content and easily converts DWG, SKP, and 3DS content into information-rich Vectorworks content. This is done entirely in the background and delivers the same user experience no matter the source data format. Additionally, the app includes over 4,600 objects from more than 260 brands, an unprecedented amount of content for a newly-introduced App. In turn, the manufacturers who support BIMobject with these formats gain immediate access to the Vectorworks user base of up to 650,000 users.
The year is 1945. WWII just ended, millions of American soldiers are returning home, and there is a dire need for housing. Architects across the United States are struggling to find a way to cheaply and efficiently meet this need while still creating beautiful architecture. Enter Arts & Architecture magazine, creators of the Case Study Houses project, which called on designers to experiment with residential architecture and create model homes that would solve the housing crisis. The resulting iconic projects soon dotted the Los Angeles, California area, becoming an influential part of the era's architectural lexicon and inspiring designers for decades to come.
Professor Marco Hemmerling, of the Cologne University of Technology, Arts, and Sciences, and Markus Graf, a research assistant at the Detmold School of Architecture and Interior Architecture, believe that a visit to the Case Study Houses should be compulsory for architecture and design students. However, being based in Germany, they needed a more practical way to expose their students to these projects. Their answer was both practical and innovative, as they worked with students to bring the Case Study Houses into the 21st century by designing them in 3D.

BIMobject, the free repository of manufacturer-specific BIM objects, is now home to Vectorworks symbols, allowing you to develop, communicate, analyze, and add value to your design process. This development arose out of a partnership between Vectorworks and BIMobject, one of Europe’s largest and fastest-growing digital content management systems, after the two companies joined forces in an effort to better meet the needs of the AEC industry.
While the concepts students learn in the classroom are valuable, there’s no substitute for the real-world experience that design competitions provide. Competitions are great because they let emerging visionaries test their skills and interact with working professionals, and receiving a prize at the end doesn’t hurt, either.
Architectural students from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) in the Dominican Republic, as well as the University of Tokyo and Tokyo University of Science in Japan, collaborated with Vectorworks users and industry experts from around the world during Build New York Live, a collaborative, virtual design competition held over 48 hours. Their team, BIM Unlimited, used non-standard geometry and BIM workflows to integrate structural analysis, MEP design, external windflow analysis, and 4D construction scheduling into a single global design. The resulting 60-story residential tower and multisport community outreach arena in Lower West Manhattan won the competition's “Best Use of BIM for Sustainability or Constructability Award.”
“The fact that we worked with a team of over 20 people from around the world to produce a project in a such an accelerated way was just amazing,” said Dominican students Ibsen García, Alfredo Cuello, and Ramdel Guerrero. “We ended up understanding how similar the workflows are in other countries compared to the Caribbean and what the demands are on other professionals in the architecture and construction field. We had no limits on the collaboration process since everyone was working in the cloud, which was really liberating. Everything just worked as it should, and we never had any issues.”
While the students in the Dominican focused on creating the building form's massing models, students from Japan used FlowDesigner software, which communicates with Vectorworks Architect via IFC file exchange, to run an airflow analysis, simulating the wind patterns over the site based on information from existing buildings and weather data. The team, comprised of students Prudsamon Kammasorn, Tatsuya Karube, Shuya Morita, Tomohiro Yamamoto, and Hideaki Yoshida under the leadership of doctoral student Yasin Mohamed Ibrahim, used windflow analysis to directly impact the building’s design. This impact includes the creation of the sports arena's distinctive, vertical-louvered façade, the setback core of the residential tower's ground floors, and the placement of trees in the landscape design, which reduced the wind velocity at the corner of the building facing the ocean.

For many architecture students around the world, there is no chapter in their textbooks that describes how to execute a BIM workflow. Much of the information that they receive comes from different sources and can even be contradictory. That’s why Carlo Galatioto, a recent graduate student from the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland with no experience with in-depth BIM workflows, decided to break the mold, using his final thesis as an opportunity to explore the practical use of BIM.

Created to support the various implementation and certification activities for buildingSMART standards, buildingSMART International's Implementation Support Group (ISG) works to improve and promote the use of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) for the exchange and sharing of Building Information Model (BIM) data among different software products. To offer context to the alphabet soup, IFC is intended to describe building and construction industry data and BCF is an open file XML format that supports workflow communication in BIM processes. And now, our very own Jeffrey W. Ouellette, Assoc. AIA, IES, senior product specialist – architecture industry, has been appointed to Chair the group following several years of dedicated service.

Organized by cloud technology company Asite, this 48-hour BIM design competition begins at noon ET on Monday September 21, 2015, and is the latest event in the Build Earth Live series, following other successful competitions in New Castle, London, Qatar, and Sydney.
