The Sound of An Easier Workflow | Direct Export to Soundvision

Vectorworks has joined forces with L-Acoustics, a Platinum member of the Vectorworks Partner Network, to offer you a direct export to Soundvision. Soundvision is a free 3D sound modeling software from L-Acoustics that allows you to place speakers in a 3D model of your production’s venue in order to evaluate and optimize performance.

With the export, released as part of Vectorworks 2024 Update 4you’ll be able to quickly transfer your 3D Vectorworks models to Soundvision and configure your L-Acoustics audio system.

3D sound modeling software like Soundvision relies on a 3D model of your venue, event design, or whatever space where the audio system will be placed. You no longer have to redraw your model and event-related equipment or import them from another CAD software.

By exporting your Vectorworks model to Soundvision, the venue and show models will be accurate and automatically include simplified geometry of your production elements like lights, trusses, or stages. You and your collaborators’ workflow will also improve with the ability to better anticipate conflicts between speakers and other equipment.

You can also harness the power of Vectorworks’ classing and organization inside of Soundvision, providing cohesion and a seamless experience between the two programs. Ultimately, all these benefits of the direct export will save you time during the planning stages of your production, letting you focus on more creative aspects of your work.

How to Easily Export to Soundvision from Vectorworks Spotlight

Now that you understand how useful the direct export to Soundvision can be for your audio and design workflows, let’s dive into exactly how you can use it.

First, select Install Partner Products under the Help menu, and then, under Entertainment, select the offering from L-Acoustics. You’ll then need to restart Vectorworks to make the plug-in appear in your menu bar.

Once you’ve reopened Vectorworks and your desired file, be sure to convert any subdivision modeling present in any classes to 3D polys. Only visible parts of your Vectorworks design are included in the export.

From there, click L-Acoustics from your menu bar and select Export to Soundvision.

A pop-up menu will then open, giving you the options of different simplification settings for rigging, lighting, and other symbols.

In most instances, Bounding Box will be the best setting, as it will keep the number of faces in your model’s geometry to a minimum. This simplification will allow you to perform an accurate sound design without slowing down Soundvision.

Once in Soundvision, you can begin performing your sound design. Before you know it, your audio planning will be done, and you can move on to the next stage of your design process.
